  1. This is a wonderfully comprehensive list, but. I doubt a team (Union…) played in the 1000’s unless they took their armor off first! my father- in – law , Hoy Duers, told us stories of.playing basketball for a traveling team in the Glens Falls area during the Depression to make money. Where would we look for the name of those traveling teams. He said they were quite popular.

    1. Hi Victoria,

Thanks for the comment. If you don’t have local access to the Glens Falls library itself, the next best thing is a Newspapers.com subscription. I use the service a lot for this site. I just did a quick look and they do have archives of the Glens Falls Post-Star from the Depression era. I poked around a little and it appears there was a semi-pro team known as the Glens Falls Cardinals during the 1930’s that played other teams from the Northeast. I wonder if that could be the team Hoy Duers played for?

  2. new england pilgrim photographer team photos, player photos, programs and more. the field is still there (blake field new haven ct)

  3. The Sacramento Buccaneers were part of the Continental Football League before the Capitols. I think they may have played one season. Still, this is an incredible resource. An unimaginable amount of research and work, obviously.

  4. It’s more recently but you forgot the second failed NHL franchise based in Atlanta, the Thrashers.

    1. Thanks Shawn. Hope to get to the Thrashers soon. For the record, the teams listed in this index are only those we’ve built entries for so far on the site. Not intended to be a list of every defunct sports team that’s out there.

  5. I did not see anything for the Orlando Bronco’s of the SFL who first played in 1963 The Pro football archives sites has information and I have found stuff from Newspaper .com on them

    1. Yep – thanks for mentioning that one Jeff. Although we have about 2,000 teams on here, we’ve only scratched the surface of the defunct teams that have come in gone in North American sport. The Southern Football League of the 1960’s is a league we’ve barely gotten to at all. I think the 1962-1965 Jacksonville Robins are the only team we’ve covered yet. Partly it’s because we like to have an image or piece of memorabilia from a team to anchor each article and we just haven’t been able to find much from the SFL. But hopefully we will be able to get the Broncos to before the coming Singularity renders all of work meaningless!

  6. Hi Richard,

Thanks for visiting. As it says at the top of the page, this is only an index of the approximately 2,000 defunct teams that have detailed entries created so far on Fun While It Lasted. Not every defunct North American franchise or team brand that ever took the field, court or rink (we believe that number to be north of 30,000, thanks in large part to Minor League Baseball)

We haven’t done a whole lot with the WCHL, but they are on the site. The WCHL home page is here: https://funwhileitlasted.net/west-coast-hockey-league/

We have entries on a handful of teams so far including the Gila Monsters, the Long Beach Ice Dogs and the Colorado Gold Kings. All linked on the page above.

    Cheers,

    Drew
