Background

The Tacoma Cubs of the Pacific Coast League (PCL) were the top farm club of the National League’s Chicago Cubs during the late 1960’s. Cubs replaced the departing Tacoma Giants, also of the PCL, who moved to Phoenix following the 1965 season.

The Cubs won the 1969 PCL championship, defeating the Eugene Emeralds 3 games to 2 in the best-of-five playoff finals. Tacoma returned to the PCL championship series in their final season of play, losing 3 games to 1 against the Salt Lake City Angels.

In late September 1971, Chicago shifted their Class AAA operation from Tacoma to Wichita, Kansas of the American Association. Two months later, the Minnesota Twins replaced Chicago as Tacoma’s parent club for the 1972 PCL season.

Field manager Whitey Lockman (Tacoma ’67-’70) ascended to the manager’s job with the Chicago Cubs in midseason 1972 and held the job until midway through the 1974 season.

  1. Back in1967-68 did the Tacoma Cubs have an open tryout? I heard of it, and went down to the stadium to participate, though I never saw any activity going on that day. It has always been on my mind.
