Background

The All-American Association was an ill-fated independent pro baseball league based in the Deep South. Although the Montgomery, Alabama team was a pleasant surprise at the box office (2,296 fans per game), four of the league’s six clubs averaged fewer than 1,000 fans per night for the Association’s 36-game home calendar.

The 6-team circuit played only one season before splintering into factions. The league’s two Texas-based teams in Fort Worth and Tyler defected to the more established Central Baseball League for the 2002 season. The league champion Baton Rouge Blue Marlins and the attendance champion Montgomery Wings forged on as founders of the new Southeastern League (2002-2003). Clubs in Albany, Georgia and Winchester, Tennessee disbanded.
