Background

The Niagara Spartans were a semi-pro football team active for three seasons between 1979 and 1981. During the 1980 and 1981 seasons the Spartans held their home games at Hyde Park Stadium, Niagara Falls’ minor league baseball stadium, better known today as Sal Maglie Stadium.

The Spartans played their debut season in the Atlantic Football Conference in 1979, competing against teams from Connecticut, Maryland, New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia. The Spartans finished the 1979 season with a 1-9 record.

In 1980, the Spartans were part of the Mid-Atlantic Football League, consisting of teams from New York, Ohio, Ontario and Pennsylvania.  Once again the Spartans found themselves terribly overmatched. The team finished 1-11 with their only victory coming via a forfeit when one of their opponents, the Toronto Grizzlies, ceased operations before their scheduled game.

The Spartans returned to the MAFL in 1981 and posted a 3-7 record. The club appears to have faded out of existence after the 1981 season.
