Background

The Reading Keystones were a Pennsylvania semi-pro football team that played in the Mason-Dixon Football Conference in 1968 and 1969. The circuit featured teams from Maryland, New Jersey and Pennsylvania with headquarters in York, PA.

The Keystones’ shared Reading’s Municipal Stadium with minor league baseball’s Reading Phillies during the late summer and then continue their season into November each autumn.

In their debut season of 1968 the Keystones ran up an 8-2 record hosted the Mason-Dixon Football Conference title game at Municipal Stadium on November 24th. The Lebanon Rams bested the Keystones 26-2 in the contest.

The Keystones returned for a second and final season in the fall of 1969. The team appears to have played its final game sometime in October 1969 before disappearing without a trace.

  1. Thank you for documenting a small bit of the City of Reading-Berks County sports history. I was the starting Offensive Guard (see Tony Baxter #64) on the 1968 Keystones. It was magical, playing on my “Field of Dreams,” fulfilling my life-long aspiration to play professional football.
