The Niagara Spartans were a semi-pro football team active for three seasons between 1979 and 1981. During the 1980 and 1981 seasons the Spartans held their home games at Hyde Park Stadium, Niagara Falls’ minor league baseball stadium, better known today as Sal Maglie Stadium.

Reading Red Sox

The Reading Red Sox were a fleeting entry in the Class AA Eastern League in 1963 and 1964. As the name implies, the team served as farm club for the Boston Red Sox of the American League. Reading previously had an Eastern League club – the Indians – from 1952 until 1961. After a summer without baseball in 1962, the Red Sox arrived in town in April 1963. Reading helped to develop several key members of Boston’s 1967 “Impossible Dream” pennant winning club, including Rico Petrocelli and Reggie Smith.

The Pennsylvania Liberties were one of ten original franchises in the International Women’s Professional Softball Association, founded in 1976. The Liberties played one season at Municipal Stadium in Reading before disbanding.
