The Columbus Chill played in the East Coast Hockey League from 1991 to 1999. They’re success paved the way for Columbus to be awarded an an NHL team, though the Chill are still fondly remembered by the city’s hockey fans.

Houston Colt .45s (1962-1964)

Houston’s dreams of landing a Major League Baseball team go back at least as far as the 1950s and the effort to relocate the St. Louis Cardinals to Texas. In 1960, to thwart a planned third major league called the Continental League, the National League awarded expansion franchises to Houston and New York City. Houston’s team was nicknamed the Colt .45s, but changed their name to Astros before moving into their then new, state-of-the-art stadium, the Astrodome.

Winnipeg Jets program

Winnipeg Jets (1972-1996)

The original Winnipeg Jets were charter members of the WHA in 1972. They moved to the NHL in 1979, along with three other WHA squads. In 1995, they were sold and moved to Phoenix for the 1996-97 hockey season. The name was revived when the Atlanta Thrashers moved to Manitoba in 2011 and assumed the Jets name but not their history.
