The Kissimmee Cobras were a Class A Florida State League farm club of Houston Astros from 1995 through 2000. The partnership between the Astros and Osceola County dated back to 1984 with the formation of the Osceola Astros. The team adopted the “Cobras” identity during a re-branding effort in late 1994. Osceola County Stadium was also Houston’s spring training home during this era.
The Daytona Beach Islanders were a Class-A farm club of the Kansas City Royals formed in October 1976. At the time, Daytona Beach had hosted more Florida State League seasons (33), games (4,461) and victories (2,328) than any other city in Florida. This despite the fact that City Island Park sat empty the previous three summers since the departure of the Daytona Beach Dodgers in late 1973. Read more…
The Pompano Beach Cubs were a Class-A farm club of the Chicago Cubs for three summers in the late 1970’s. The Cubs were the second minor league club to make a home at Pompano Beach Municipal Stadium, following on the heels of the Pompano Beach Mets (1969-1973).
The 1975 Key West Cubs marked the final summer of pro baseball in America’s southernmost outpost. The Chicago Cubs stocked their Florida State League farm club with a bumper crop of pitching talent including future Major League standouts Mike Krukow, Dennis Lamp and Donnie Moore and 2006 Hall-of-Fame inductee Bruce Sutter. Nevertheless, Key West finished dead last with a dreadful 37-94 record and the club moved to Pompano Beach in 1976.
