Pittsfield Rangers

The Pittsfield Rangers were a Class AA Eastern League farm club in Western Massachusetts from 1972 to 1975. The franchise was formerly known as the Pittsfield Senators (1970-1971) but re-branded when their Major League parent club, the Washington Senators, moved west to become the Texas Rangers in the fall of 1971. Future Major League All-Stars that played in Pittsfield during the Rangers era included Roy Howell (’72-’73), Bill Madlock (’72), Jim Sundberg (’73), Roy Smalley (’74) and Len Barker (’75). In 1976, the team changed its name to the Berkshire Brewers after the Milwaukee Brewers replaced Texas as Pittsfield’s parent club.

The Nashua Angels were a farm club of the California Angels that competed for just one season in the Class AA Eastern League during the summer of 1983.  The franchise moved from Holyoke, Massachusetts one week before Christmas in 1982. Prominent future Major Leaguers on the club included pitcher Kirk McCaskill and outfielder Devon White.

1984 Waterbury Angels baseball program from the Eastern League

Waterbury Angels

The city of Waterbury, Connecticut had a Class AA Eastern League minor league baseball team for 21 years from 1966 to 1986.  The ball club changed affiliations with Major League Baseball with extraordinary frequency – no parent club ever stayed more than four seasons.  The California Angels had one of the briefest flings in Waterbury. They replaced the departing Cincinnati Reds in 1984 and sponsored Waterbury’s club for just one year before leaving town.

1985 Pittsfield Cubs baseball program from the Eastern League

Pittsfield Cubs

The Pittsfield Cubs were the Class AA farm club of the Chicago Cubs for four seasons between 1985 and 1988.  The arrival of the Cubs marked the return of pro baseball to historic Wahconah Park for the first time since the Berkshire Brewers departed after the 1976 season. Future stars Mark Grace, Jamie Moyer and Rafael Palmeiro all played in Pittsfield during the Cubs era.
