1973 Sherbrooke Pirates baseball program from the Eastern League

Sherbrooke Pirates

The Sherbrooke Pirates were the Class AA farm club of the Pittsburgh Pirates for two seasons in the early 1970’s.  Pittsburgh moved their Eastern League farm club to Sherbrooke from Waterbury, Connecticut in 1972. This was part of a larger Eastern League push into the province of Quebec during the era.  By 1972 three of the circuit’s eight clubs were located in French Canada. Pittsburgh had a strong farm system at the time, with future Major League All-Stars Tony Armas and Kent Tekulve spending time in Sherbrooke on their way to The Show.

1973 Bristol Red Sox baseball program from the Eastern League

Bristol Red Sox

Bristol, Connecticut hosted the Class AA farm club of the Boston Red Sox in the Eastern League for ten seasons from 1973 to 1982. It was a Golden Age for the Red Sox farm system and a parade of future Major League stars came through ancient Muzzy Field on their way to Fenway Park, including eventual Hall-of-Famers Jim Rice (1973) and Wade Boggs (1978 and 1979). The team moved to New Britain, Connecticut ahead of the 1983 season.

The Berkshire Brewers were the last in a string of Class AA Eastern League baseball clubs that made their home at historic Wahconah Park in Pittsfield, Massachusetts between 1965 and 1976.   The Brewers followed the Pittsfield Red Sox (1965-1969), Pittsfield Senators (1970-1971) and Pittsfield Rangers (1972-1975).

1971 Les Aigles de Trois-Rivieres baseball program from the Eastern League

Les Aigles de Trois-Rivieres (1971-1977)

Les Aigles de Trois-Rivieres (or the Three Rivers Eagles, in translation) were part of the Class AA Eastern League’s expansion into the Province of Quebec in the summer of 1971. Les Aigles joined the Quebec Carnavals to boost the Eastern League’s membership from six to eight clubs. Both the Aigles and the Quebec City club were existing organizations that previously played in the Quebec Provincial League, an independent baseball circuit with no formal connection to “organized” Minor League Baseball. In the Eastern League, the Aigles served as a farm club from 1971 through the ball club’s final season during the summer of 1977.
