Pawtucket Indians

The Pawtucket Indians were a Class AA farm club of the Cleveland Indians for two summers during the mid-1960’s. They were the first pro baseball team to play at the city’s McCoy Stadium since the Pawtucket Slaters and the New England League closed for business in 1949. After losing money on concert promotions at McCoy during the summer of 1967, club owners Jerry Waring and George Cardono moved the franchise to Waterbury, Connecticut ahead of the 1968 Eastern League season.

The Johnstown Red Sox were a Boston Red Sox farm club that operated for just one season during the summer of 1961. The Sox finished fourth in the 6-team Eastern League with a 61-79 record. Nine members of the 1961 Johnstown Red Sox eventually made it to the Majors. By far the most successful was knuckleball artist Wilbur Wood, who was promoted to the Majors in Boston by mid-summer. Owner Joe Buzas moved the franchise to York, Pennsylvania after the 1961 season.

The Manchester Yankees were a Class AA farm club of the New York Yankees for three (losing) seasons from 1969 through 1971. This short-lived Eastern League franchise was the only professional baseball team to make their home in the state of New Hampshire between 1950 and 1980. The ball club changed hands and was relocated to West Haven, Connecticut following the 1971 season.

York Pirates

The York Pirates were a short-lived Class AA farm club of the Pittsburgh Pirates, active in the Eastern League for two summers in 1968-1969. The Pirates replaced the York White Roses in the EL following the 1967 season. Weirdly, the York Pirates won the 1969 Eastern League championship despite losing the only game played during the league’s championship series. York lost Game 1 to the Pittsfield Red Sox. After horrible weather washed out the remainder of the series, York were declared league champs by virtue of having the best record in the regular season.
