The Xtreme Soccer League was just one of the countless leagues and re-configurations spawned by the sport of indoor soccer’s 21st century identity crisis.  The league featured only four teams and staged only forty total matches during its brief existence in 2008 and 2009.

Background

One of the two offshoot leagues, along with the National Indoor Soccer League (2008-2009) which formed out of the break-up of the second Major Indoor Soccer League (2001-2008).  The XSL attempted to market itself as a “lifestyle brand” that was not simply about indoor soccer, but also a year-long immersive multi-media…oh, who cares.

The XSL’s supposed new approach failed to alter the downward trajectory of the indoor game as a professional sport and folded after one season. The league played only forty total matches in its short lifespan and held no playoffs. The Detroit Ignition claimed the only XSL championship by virtue of holding the best regular season record (12-8).

At the end of the season, the Chicago, Detroit and New Jersey franchises all disbanded. The league’s sole survivor, the indestructible Milwaukee Wave (born 1984) hooked up with its old buddies in the National Indoor Soccer League and formed the third (!) version of the Major Indoor Soccer League.
