Dayton Dynamo

The Dayton Dynamo were an indoor soccer club that played seven winter seasons in Western Ohio. The team moved frequently, spending two years at Hara Arena, three seasons at the newly opened Nutter Center and its final two years at the downtown Dayton Convention Center. The Dynamo played in the American Indoor Soccer Association, subsequently re-branded as the National Professional Soccer League after 1990. Dayton appeared in the AISA championship series in 1990 and the NPSL finals in 1991 but lost on both occasions. New owners moved the franchise to Cincinnati in 1995.

Houston Aeros (1972-1978)

The Houston Aeros were a powerhouse club in the World Hockey Association, a 1970’s-era rival to the NHL. The Aeros are best remembered for luring pro hockey’s all-time leading scorer, Gordie Howe, out of retirement in 1973 and signing him to play alongside his sons Mark and Marty Howe.  There was little rust on the 45-year old star.  Mr. Hockey won league MVP honors in 1974 as the Aeros won the first of two straight AVCO Cup championships that spring.

Dayton Rockettes

The Dayton Rockettes were one of eight original franchises in the Women’s Professional Basketball League. The WBL, which debuted in December 1978, was the first professional basketball league for women, pre-dating the WNBA by nearly 20 years. Team owner Lou Deitelbaum stopped paying the bills by January, causing the league to re-possess the Dayton franchise on February 8th, 1979. The orphaned Rockettes struggled to finish out the final months of the 1978-79 season under league stewardship. The club disbanded after one season, finishing with a 12-22 record.
