Empire State Cobras

The Empire State Cobras were a One-Year Wonder in Roller Hockey International during the summer of 1996. Based out of tiny Glens Falls, New York, the team seemed incompatible with the rest of Roller Hockey International, a 17-team cross-continental league that often played in huge NHL and NBA arenas. Sure enough finances turned out to be a problem. Although the club was good and won the Atlantic Division with a 16-7-5 record, the Cobras reportedly had to sell their home court advantage in the playoffs to the lower-seeded Orlando Jackals.  They lost to the eventual champion Jackals in the first round and left town shortly thereafter.

Philadelphia Bulldogs (1994-1996)

The Philadelphia Bulldogs were a professional roller hockey promotion that played three summer seasons at the Spectrum from 1994 to 1996. The team initially generated some publicity due to the celebrity involvement of sitcom star Tony Danza in the team’s ownership group and Philadelphia Flyers legend Dave Schultz in the front office. The Bulldogs closed their doors following the 1996 season and their league, Roller Hockey International, played its final game in 1999.

San Diego Barracudas

The San Diego Barracudas rolled through four seasons of Roller Hockey International between 1993 and 1996. The club played most of their games at the Sports Arena, San Diego’s long-time home of professional ice hockey, major rock concerts and NBA basketball. But by late 1996, the money-bleeding Barracudas fortunes took on a distinct This Is Spinal Tap flavor. The ‘Cudas played their final home game at a youth inline skating rink called Stuart’s Roller World in Orange, California on August 15th, 1996.
