Portland Rage

The Portland Rage were a two-year entry in Roller Hockey International, a start-up summertime league that sought to capitalize on the 1990’s surge of interest for in-line skating. The Rage played out of Memorial Coliseum, the Rose City’s NBA arena at the time, during the summers of 1993 and 1994. The 1994 squad made a Cinderella run to RHI’s Murphy Cup championship series before falling to the favored Buffalo Stampede in a two-game sweep. The club quietly disbanded after the season.

New England Stingers

This summer professional roller hockey franchise competed during the summer of 1994 at Portland’s Cumberland County Civic Center. The owners of Portland’s popular American Hockey League franchise, the Portland Pirates, also controlled the Stingers. They folded the Stingers after one season due to tepid corporate and fan support.
