Cincinnati Slammers

During the early-to-mid 1980’s, the Continental Basketball Association made several efforts to grab a foothold in “Major League” cities.  The CBA, at the time, was akin to triple-A baseball and had a formal partnership with the NBA. While the CBA established passionate followings in cities like Albany, New York and La Crosse, Wisconsin during the 1980’s, the league’s experience in Cincinnati was typical of the box office busts that resulted from each one of its major market adventures.

Wichita Falls Texans

The Wichita Falls Texans were a franchise in the Continental Basketball Association, the top developmental league of the NBA during the 1980’s and 1990’s. The Texans played at D.L. Ligon Coliseum on the campus of Midwestern State University. The 1990-91 Texans squad, led through their playoff run by former NBA 1st round pick Ennis Whatley, captured the CBA championship.

Tulsa Zone Continental Basketball Association

Tulsa Zone

During the late 1980’s, Tulsa had a championship minor league basketball team known as the Fast Breakers, named for the chain of convenient stores operated by the team’s owner. When the team was sold in 1991, the new owners changed the name and logo to this Twilight Zone-inspired double entendre. Ironically, the zone defense was illegal in the Continental Basketball Association.

Shreveport Storm

Shreveport, Louisiana had a franchise in the Continental Basketball Association, the NBA’s Official Developmental League at the time, for tw seasons during the mid-1990’s. The team was originally known as the Shreveport Crawdads during the 1994-95 season. After a trademark challenge with Minor League Baseball’s Hickory Crawdads, the CBA club was compelled to change its name to the Storm for the 1995-96 season. Both seasons were dreadful both on the court and at the Hirsch Memorial Coliseum box office. After only one season under the “Storm” banner, the Shreveport CBA franchise folded in September 1996.
