During the early-to-mid 1980’s, the Continental Basketball Association made several efforts to grab a foothold in “Major League” cities. The CBA, at the time, was akin to triple-A baseball and had a formal partnership with the NBA. While the CBA established passionate followings in cities like Albany, New York and La Crosse, Wisconsin during the 1980’s, the league’s experience in Cincinnati was typical of the box office busts that resulted from each one of its major market adventures.
The Wichita Falls Texans were a franchise in the Continental Basketball Association, the top developmental league of the NBA during the 1980’s and 1990’s. The Texans played at D.L. Ligon Coliseum on the campus of Midwestern State University. The 1990-91 Texans squad, led through their playoff run by former NBA 1st round pick Ennis Whatley, captured the CBA championship.

During the late 1980’s, Tulsa had a championship minor league basketball team known as the Fast Breakers, named for the chain of convenient stores operated by the team’s owner. When the team was sold in 1991, the new owners changed the name and logo to this Twilight Zone-inspired double entendre. Ironically, the zone defense was illegal in the Continental Basketball Association.
