Two-year Arena Football entry that set up shop at the Superdome in 1991 and 1992. Even among Arena Football diehards, the New Orleans Night are an obscure and rarely mentioned franchise. To the extent they are remembered at all, it is often for sporting garish Zubaz stripes on their uniforms as part of a 1991 promotional campaign with the flash-in-the-pan athletic apparel manufacturer.
A small market mainstay in the Arena Football League for over a decade, the Grand Rapids Rampage were owned by heirs to the Amway fortune. The team’s finest hour came in 2001, when the Rampage won Arena Bowl XV in front of a sell-out crowd at Van Andel Arena and a national broadcast television audience on ABC.
The New York CityHawks enjoyed a brief two-year fling in the Arena Football League. The team performed quite poorly both on the field and at the box office. The team finished 2-12 in 1997 and 3-11 in 1998. The CityHawks marked the Arena Football League’s second failed attempt to establish a franchise in the nation’s biggest media market. The Los Angeles Cobras were an early Arena Football League team that lasted for just one season (1988) at the old L.A. Memorial Sports Arena. During their brief life, the Cobras signed 39-year old former Oakland/L.A. Raiders All-Pro wideout Cliff Branch and snagged a cameo appearance in a Charles Bronson action movie.
