New Orleans Voodoo (2004-2008)

The (original) New Orleans Voodoo were a tremendously popular Arena Football League team that played in the city from 2004-2005 and 2007-2008.  The team went on hiatus for the 2006 season in the wake of Hurricane Katrina and saw its roster dispersed.  But the Voodoo returned to New Orleans Arena in 2007 and were more popular than ever, setting an all-time league record with the reported sale of over 13,000 season tickets.

Las Vegas Sting

The purple and gold-clad Sting were Las Vegas’ first of several Arena Football League franchises. The team played at the newly opened MGM Grand Garden Arena in 1994 before moving to the Thomas & Mack Center for their final season in 1995. The franchise moved to Southern California under new ownership and became the Anaheim Piranhas in 1996. The AFL would try again in Las Vegas with the Gladiators (2003-2007) and the Outlaws (2015).

The Massachusetts Marauders played a single season of Arena Football at the Worcester Centrum in the summer of 1994. The Marauders featured local legend Gordie Lockbaum, the former Holy Cross star who finished third in the 1987 Heisman Trophy balloting.  Lockbaum saw limited playing time for the Marauders, in what would turn out to be the only regular season professional football action of his career. The Marauders folded after one season amidst a dispute between team owner Joseph O’Hara and Arena Football League Commissioner Jim Drucker.
