Background

The Lynn Tigers were a Massachusetts-based farm team of the Detroit Tigers in the faltering Class B New England League during the summer of 1949.

Fraser Field previously hosted the New England League’s top-notch Lynn Red Sox ball club, who finished first place in the regular season standings each of the past three seasons.  After the 1948 season, the Boston Red Sox offloaded the Lynn club to new owner Larry Kelly, who signed on as a Tigers affiliate.

The New England League began the 1949 season on April 30th with eight clubs. But the wheels soon came off. The Providence Grays folded on June 20th. One month later, on July 19th, Lynn called it quits as well, with Fall River Indians and Manchester Yankees withdrawing on the very same night.

The remaining four clubs finished out the 1949 and then the New England League went out of business.

Pro baseball did not return to Fraser Field for 30 years until the arrival of the Lynn Sailors of the Eastern League in 1980.
