Background

The Scottish Claymores were a franchise in the NFL’s Europe-based World League developmental league. (The league later changed its named to NFL Europe). Originally based in Edinburgh, the Claymore began splitting games Edinburgh and Glasgow’s Hampden Park in 1998. By the 2000’s the team shifted operations almost entirely to Glasgow.

The franchise’s high point came at the climax of season two. The Claymores hosted World Bowl ’96 at Edinburgh’s Murrayfield Stadium against the Frankfurt Galaxy. 38,982 fans showed up and watched the Claymores prevail 32-27 to claim their lone World Bowl title.

The Claymores made one other World Bowl appearance, losing the 2000 championship game to the Rhein Fire 13-10.

During the 2000 season, author Lars Anderson embedded with the Claymores. His chronicle of the season, Proving Ground: A Season on the Fringe in NFL Europe, was published by St. Martin’s Press in 2001.

NFL Europe closed down the Claymores franchise in September 2004. The league played three more seasons before the NFL folded its European operations entirely in June of 2007.

The Proving Ground

A Season on the Fringe in NFL Europe
By Lars Anderson

Author Lars Anderson brings to life the compelling drama of NFL Europe by spending a season with the Scottish Claymores. Anderson lived with the players at a hotel in Glasgow, Scotland, spending every waking minute with them-eating and heading out to the pubs as the Claymores made their championship run. Along with detailing the life and times of the Claymores, Anderson digs deep into the background of the players and coaches to help explain why some succeed and others fail in their quest to make it to that shining city on the hill–the NFL.
