Background
L.A. United was a One-Year Wonder in the Continental Indoor Soccer League (CISL). The club was owned by Los Angeles Lakers owner Dr. Jerry Buss and was in some ways a re-boot of the Los Angeles Lazers (1982-1989), the indoor soccer team run by Dr. Buss and his son Johnny for seven seasons during the 1980’s. CISL founder and Commissioner Ron Weinstein was a former Lazers executive. United Head Coach Gus Mokalis and General Manager Tim Harris were both former Lazers players.
Also reminiscent of the Lazers: United didn’t fare very well on the carpet and were a weak draw at the box office. The team tied for last place in the CISL with a 6-22 record in the summer of 1993. United claimed an average of 1,913 fans per game in the 16,000-seat Forum, also worst in the league.
The Buss family showed enormous patience with the Lazers during the 1980’s, but no so with the United. After one lonely season at the Forum they sold the franchise off to the operators of Arrowhead Pond arena in Anaheim. The new owners renamed the club the Anaheim Splash for the 1994 seasons. The Splash played for four seasons before folding along with the CISL itself in late 1997.
