The World League operated as a spring development league for the National Football League. NFL owners closed down the league after two seasons in the fall of 1992. The World League did not operate in either 1993 or 1994. A re-organized version of the World League resumed play in 1995 as a Europe-only venture, with the former American and Canadian franchises that took part in the 1991 and 1992 seasons eliminated.
