The Pittsfield-Berkshire Red Sox, also known simply as the Pittsfield Red Sox, were a Class AA farm club of the Boston Red Sox for five seasons during the late 1960’s. When the team arrived from Reading, Pennsylvania in late 1964 it marked the return of professional baseball to the Western Massachusetts city after a 13-year absence. George “Boomer” Scott won the Eastern League triple crown in 1965 while leading Pittsfield-Berkshire to the league pennant, but amazingly lost out on the league’s Most Valuable Player award to his teammate, journeyman catcher Owen Johnson.
The Pittsfield Rangers were a Class AA Eastern League farm club in Western Massachusetts from 1972 to 1975. The franchise was formerly known as the Pittsfield Senators (1970-1971) but re-branded when their Major League parent club, the Washington Senators, moved west to become the Texas Rangers in the fall of 1971. Future Major League All-Stars that played in Pittsfield during the Rangers era included Roy Howell (’72-’73), Bill Madlock (’72), Jim Sundberg (’73), Roy Smalley (’74) and Len Barker (’75). In 1976, the team changed its name to the Berkshire Brewers after the Milwaukee Brewers replaced Texas as Pittsfield’s parent club.
The Berkshire Black Bears were an effort to establish independent professional baseball at historic Wahconah Park in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. The Black Bears arrived in Pittsfield in 2002, close on the heels of the departing Pittsfield Astros of the Major League-affiliated New York-Penn League. Former Boston Red Sox slugger George “Boomer” Scott, who starred for the Pittsfield Red Sox clubs of the 1960’s, managed the Black Bears. The franchise left town after two seasons, moving to New Haven, Connecticut in 2004.
The Pittsfield Hillies were a Depression-era minor league baseball team in the Berkshires region of Western Massachusetts. They played in the Class A Eastern League and won league titles in 1919 and 1921.
