The short-lived Jacksonville Jets had played all of ten days in their new home city before team owner Ted Stepien began threatening to move his nomadic Continental Basketball Association (CBA) franchise. Again.
The Lynn Tigers were a Massachusetts-based farm team of the Detroit Tigers in the faltering Class B New England League during the summer of 1949. The New England League began the 1949 season on April 30th with eight clubs. But the wheels soon came off. On July 19th Lynn called it quits in midseason, with the Fall River Indians and Manchester Yankees also withdrawing from the collapsing circuit on the same night.
The Grays Harbor Gulls of Washington state were founding members of the independent Western Baseball League (WBL) in 1995. The Gulls played against WBL clubs up and down the Pacific Coast from British Columbia in the north down to Long Beach, California in the south. The team’s ownership collapsed due to financial problems in June 1998 midway through the Gulls’ fourth season. The league took over the team, re-named it the “Western Warriors” and put the players on a months-long road trip so as not to disrupt the remaining schedules of the other WBL clubs.
Truly dreadful semi-pro football team that absorbed seven straight lopsided defeats during the summer of 1977 before deciding to fold up their tent. Incredibly, the Houston Seagulls produce an NFL success story despite their short & woeful life. 24-year old cement truck driver and ex-Seagull Johnnie Dirden walked into Houston Oilers training camp the following spring and made the team as a kick returner. Dirden went on to a 5-year career in the NFL and USFL.
The Kansas City Trailblazers were a co-ed team rodeo promotion that took part in Major League Rodeo during the summers of 1978 and 1979. Major League Rodeo contests consisted of seven skills: bareback bronc riding, barrel racing, team roping, saddle bronc riding, calf roping, steer wrestling and bull riding. Each team sported a roster of 12 cowboys & 3 cowgirls. The Trailblazers’ disastrous second season was ruined by the collapse of Kemper Arena’s roof and the midseason closure of Major League Rodeo itself.
