The Columbus Cardinals (not to be confused with the Ohio-based Columbus Red Birds of the same era) were a Class A farm club of the St. Louis Cardinals for a decade after World War II. The Cardinals played in the old South Atlantic League, which featured ball clubs in Alabama, Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas.
We’re talking Columbus, Georgia (not Ohio) on today’s FWiL entry. The Columbus Astros were the long-time Class AA farm team of the Houston Astros in the Southern League. Future stars Ken Forsch, J.R. Richard, Glenn Davis and Ken Caminiti were among the many notable players who developed their talents at Columbus’ Golden Park during the Astros era.
