San Diego Flash (1998-2001)

The San Diego Flash were a 2nd Division professional soccer club that competed in the United Soccer League’s A-League from 1998 through 2001. At the time, the A-League was the second highest level of outdoor soccer competition in the United States, operating one level beneath Major League Soccer. The club helped to develop the careers of future Major League Soccer standouts Joe Cannon and Jimmy Conrad before collapsing due to finance problems.

San Diego Nomads

The San Diego Nomads were a low-budget semi-pro/pro soccer club that competed during the late 1980’s, a period viewed as the Dark Ages for outdoor professional soccer in the United States. From 1986 to 1989, U.S. National Team players like Marcelo Balboa and Paul Caligiuri played for the Nomads alongside high school players and moonlighting San Diego Sockers indoor players such as Paul Dougherty and Paul Wright.
