The Houston E-Z Riders were a co-ed tennis promotion that competed in the first season of World Team Tennis in 1974. The Riders’ top attraction was Aussie star John Newcombe, a 7-time Grand Slam champion. The team’s logo was an endearingly goofy ripoff of Yosemite Sam. The mustachioed outlaw toted a pair of smoking tennis racquets in his hip holsters.
The Hawaii Leis were founding members of World Team Tennis, an innovative co-ed pro tennis promotion that brought international superstars Ilie Nastase and Margaret Court to Honolulu during the Leis’ three-year run from 1974 to 1976. Owner Don Kelleher moved the Leis to the Pacific Northwest for the 1977 season, splitting time between Seattle and Portland as the “Sea-Port Cascades”.
