New Orleans Nets

The New Orleans Nets were a six-person, co-ed professional tennis team that played out of the Superdome for the final season of the original World Team Tennis (WTT) league during the summer of 1978. The team also used the name “Sunbelt Nets”. The Nets roster included NBA star John Lucas, playing WTT during his summer break from the Houston Rockets and Lucas’ mixed-doubles partner, Dr. Renee Richards. Richards was a 43-year old trans woman whose efforts to play in the women’s field at the 1976 and 1977 U.S. Open tournaments became a cultural flashpoint during the late 1970’s.

Pittsburgh Triangles

The Steelers and the Pirates were not the Steel City’s only championship team during the 1970’s. Pittsburgh also had the Triangles – a co-ed, six-player World Team Tennis promotion that played at the Civic Arena and brought home a title in 1975 with the help of Grand Slam champions Evonne Goolagong and Vitas Gerulaitis.

1988 World Team Tennis Program

Charlotte Heat

The Charlotte Heat were a co-ed professional tennis club that competed in Billie Jean King’s summertime TeamTennis promotion for five seasons between 1987 and 1991.  The Heat won the league championship in each of their first two seasons of play in 1987 and 1988. After playing their first three seasons at the Olde Providence Racquet Club, the Heat moved into the vast expanse of the Charlotte Coliseum for their final two campaigns in 1990 and 1991.
