The Greenwood Braves were a South Carolina-based Class A farm club of the Atlanta Braves from 1968 to 1979 in the Western Carolinas League. The Braves won the league championship six times in twelve seasons, although part of this success is due to the fact that the struggling WCL sometimes played with as few as four active teams during the 1970’s.
Short-lived South Carolina minor league baseball outfit that played just a single campaign during the summer of 1973. Although playing under the “Cardinals” name, the Orangeburg Cardinals were actually a Co-Op team, accepting low-level prospects from multiple Major League Baseball organizations, including the St. Louis Cardinals. Notable personalities on the 1973 Orangeburg Cardinals included manager Jimmy Piersall and 20-year old outfielder Randy Poffo, who would later gain worldwide fame as the wrestler Randy “The Macho Man” Savage during the 1980’s.
The Anderson Rangers were a Class A farm club of the Texas Rangers during the summer of 1975. The Rangers were part of a parade of short-lived minor league baseball teams that came through this South Carolina city during the 1970’s.
The Pittsburgh Pirates had a single-A farm club in Charleston, South Carolina for six summers from 1973 to 1978. The ball club played at College Park at the corner of Grove Street and Rutledge Avenue. The team was a member of the old Western Carolinas League (1960-1979). The team was known as the Pirates from 1973 to 1975 and again in the club’s final season of 1978. But in 1976 and 1977 the team was known as the “Patriots” and wore red, white & blue uniforms.
