1987 Shreveport Captains baseball program from the Texas League

Shreveport Captains (1971-2000)

The Shreveport Captains held a membership in Minor League Baseball’s Texas League for thirty seasons between 1971 and 2000. For most of that time, from 1979 onward, the team served as a farm team for the San Francisco Giants. The Captains were a Texas League dynasty during the 1990’s, advancing to the playoff championship series five times and winning three league titles. New owners changed the team’s name to the Shreveport Swamp Dragons in 2001 and the franchise moved away to Frisco, Texas a year later following the 2002 season.

Wichita Wranglers

The Wichita Wranglers were the longest-tenured of several franchises that kept affiliated minor league baseball at Lawrence Dumont Stadium for nearly four decades between 1970 and 2007. The Wranglers followed the Wichita Aeros (1970-1984) and the Wichita Pilots (1987-1988).  The club served as a farm team for the San Diego Padres from 1989 until 1994 and for the Kansas City Royals from 1995 until owner Bob Rich moved the team to Springdale, Arkansas after the 2007 season.

The Amarillo Giants were a Class AA farm club of the San Francisco Giants in the Texas League from 1968 through 1974. The team moved away to Lafayette, Louisiana in 1975, but the Texas League would return to Amarillo with a new club, the Gold Sox, in 1976.

Dallas-Fort Worth Spurs

The Dallas-Fort Worth Spurs were a popular minor league baseball entry of the late 1960’s, co-owned famed sports investor Lamar Hunt. Future Major League stars Don Baylor, Bobby Grich, Joe Niekro, Doug DeCinces and Enos Cabell also spent time in a Spurs uniform. The Spurs were displaced when Major League Baseball’s Washington Senators moved to Arlington in 1972 and became the Texas Rangers.
