Duluth-Superior Dukes (1993-2002)

This long-running indy ball club lasted for ten seasons but never had a winning record.  Nevertheless, the Duluth-Superior Dukes won one Northern League crown in 1997 and played for another in 2000. The Dukes were a brand revival of the original D-S Dukes, who played from 1960 to 1970. Like the original Dukes, the modern day Dukes played at historic Wade Stadium, a Depression era Works Progress Administration ballpark erected in 1940-1941.

The Madison Black Wolf were the last professional baseball team to make their home in Wisconsin’s capital city. The Black Wolf played at Warner Park and were members of the Northern League for five seasons between 1996 and 2000. The Northern League was an independent circuit whose clubs held no affiliations with Major League Baseball organizations. The team struggled both competitively and at the box office before moving to Lincoln, Nebraska under new ownership in 2001.

Massachusetts Mad Dogs

The Massachusetts Mad Dogs were an independent pro baseball outfit that played at Fraser Field, a Depression-era ballpark in Lynn from 1996 through 1999. Former Red Sox star George “Boomer” Scott managed the ball club and ex-Sox pitcher Dennis “Oil Can” Boyd briefly pitched for the Dogs during the 1997 season. The decrepit condition of Fraser Field hinderedthe clubs final seasons, with the park’s unique clamshell roof condemned and propped up by wooden beams in 1998. The franchise left Lynn and went on hiaturs in 2000, later re-surfacing in Pittsfield, Mass in 2002.
