Grimy Downing Stadium on Randall’s Island was the CBGB’s of New York City sporting venues.  In 1975 – the same year that the Ramones, the Heartbreakers, Blondie and the Talking Heads were igniting the punk scene at Hilly Kristal’s dank nightclub in the Bowery – Downing Stadium was the home to the New York Cosmos at the seismic moment that Pele arrived in American to play for that iconic club.  For American soccer junkies of a certain age, proclaiming “…and I was there” at Randall’s Island remains a form of cultural cred that belies the now-demolished oval’s brief and inadequate life as a pro soccer ground.

The Staten Island Vipers were a short-lived 2nd Division pro soccer club that served as an affiliate of the 1st Division New York/New Jersey MetroStars of Major League Soccer. The team lasted just two seasons on Staten Island in 1998 and 1999. In their finest hour, the Vipers upset their parent club, the MetroStars, in the 3rd Round of the 1999 U.S. Open Cup tournament.

Boston Bulldogs

The Boston Bulldogs were a short-lived lower-division American pro soccer side that played in suburban Framingham, Massachusetts from 1999 through 2001. The team served as a farm club of Major League Soccer’s New England Revolution. Former Scottish international Steve Nicol, who won England’ Football of the Year award with Liverpool in 1988-89, was the Bulldogs player-manager. The money-bleeding professional club disbanded following the 2001 season and transitioned its business activities towards an elite youth soccer academy that became known as Mass Premier Soccer.
