Background
The National Hockey Association (NHA), direct forerunner of the National Hockey League (NHL), was formed in 1909 after the dissolution of the Eastern Canada Amateur Hockey Association and the abrupt closing of the the Canadian Hockey Association, which was only a few weeks old.
In 1917, in an effort to get rid of one of the owners, Eddie Livingstone, owner of Toronto Shamrocks and Toronto Blueshirts, the league suspended operations. The other owners than formed the National Hockey League (NHL) sans Livingstone. Unable to rid themselves of the troublesome owner, they made the NHA suspension permanent in 1918, and the NHL continued on.
