Background
The 1950 Sunbury Athletics were a Class B farm club of the American League’s Philadelphia Athletics. This Pennsylvania-based club competed in the Interstate League, which was composed of eight clubs that summer, representing the mid-Atlantic states of Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
The Philadelphia A’s were in a state of terminal decay at the dawn of the 1950’s and were incapable of providing Sunbury with either a winning ballclub or promising Major League prospects. Sunbury finished the 1950 Interstate League season in last place with a 53-86 record.
Only two Sunbury Athletics players, infielder Jack Littrell and pitcher Dutch Romberger, would advance to the Majors and neither would ever play a full season with a Major League club. (Several older players on the Sunbury team, including 34-year old player-manager George Staller, had prior Major League experience during the 1940’s).
