Remembering The Eastern Professional Basketball League
By Syl Sobel & Jay Rosenstein

In Boxed out of the NBA: Remembering the Eastern Professional Basketball League, Syl Sobel and Jay Rosenstein tell the fascinating story of a league that was a pro basketball institution for over 30 years, showcasing top players from around the country. During the early years of professional basketball, the Eastern League was the next-best professional league in the world after the NBA. It was home to big-name players such as Sherman White, Jack Molinas, and Bill Spivey, who were implicated in college gambling scandals in the 1950s and were barred from the NBA, and top Black players such as Hal “King” Lear, Julius McCoy, and Wally Choice, who could not make the NBA into the early 1960s due to unwritten team quotas on African-American players.

Background

This minor league edition of the Baltimore Bullets basketball team is not to be confused with Baltimore’s two NBA versions of the Bullets (1944-1954 and 1963-1973).

The Bullets of 1958-1961 played in the Eastern Professional Basketball League and were the only non-Pennsylvania team in the league during this period.  The Bullets made it to the Eastern League championship in two of their three seasons.  In 1960, the Bullets lost a best 2-of-3 series to the Easton Madisons.  The following season, the Bullets defeated the Allentown Jets 119-104 in a single-game championship contest.

After the 1960-61 season, the Bullets moved to New Jersey and became the Camden Bullets (1961-1966).

  1. I’m looking to find some help in getting good information on the 1958 team, specifically info on the details of the uniforms. My uncle was on that team and I would like to have a custom jersey made but I want to try to be as close to authentic as I can, but the few photos I find are not major helps to me. If someone here is able to help me out you can reach me at dedicated5446 [AT] yahoo [dot] com.

  2. I attended quite a few games during those seasons and have a good memory. Whether what I know can help you is yet to be seen. Feel free to get back to me at your convenience. I am nearing 80 so don’t know how long I’ll be around. I best remember players and uniform numbers. I live in Florida now. Today is 3-17-2022.
