Background

The Spring Football League was yet another doomed attempt to establish professional spring football in the Sunbelt states. The SFL lacked the uber-rich investors and TV contracts of the United States Football League and the NFL-backing of the World League of American Football. In fact, the league planned to play its opening weekend less than two months after announcing its formation on March 1st, 2000.

The SFL debuted on April 29th, 2000 with with four franchises in Houston, Los Angeles, Miami and San Antonio and plans to play a brief 4-week test schedule leading up to a championship game at the Orange Bowl in Miami on May 27th, 2000.  Ultimately, the league lacked the resources to execute even this modest roll-out effort and the Spring Football League disbanded in early May 2000 after staging just four games over the course of two weekends.
