Background

The original Coastal Plain League started out as a semi-pro league using college players in 1934. In 1937 the Coastal Plain League turned professional and was awarded Class D status. Over 15 seasons of play, every club that participated in the Coastal Plain League was from North Carolina.

Like many minor league loops, the Coastal Plain League did not play during the height of U.S. involvement in World War II. The circuit went dark for four summers form 1942 to 1945.

In 1997, a collegiate wooden bat league formed and revived the Coastal Plain League name. The new CPL begins its 23rd season in 2019.
