Background
The Arizona-Mexico League of 2003 was an under-capitalized independent baseball league that lasted just over two weeks before closing its doors. The name was a revival of the old Class C Arizona-Mexico League active from 1955 to 1958.
The start-up circuit was troubled from the outset. Originally envisioned as a four-team loop with clubs in Bisbee-Douglas and Nogales in Arizona, plus Juarez and Sonora in Mexico, the Juarez ownership group pulled out a few weeks before opening day. The planned Juarez club was hastily moved to Baja California in western Mexico. The Nogales ownership also bailed on the team, leaving the Bisbee-Douglas group to attempt to prop up both Arizona clubs. The whole enterprise sputtered to a close on June 17, 2003, leaving more than 100 players, coaches & staff unemployed.
