Background
The Orange Empire Outlaws were a short-lived semi-pro football outfit that competed in the California Football League during the summer of 1981. The team practiced at Anaheim High School and played home games at Brea High School Stadium.
The Outlaws were notable primarily for the involvement of former Los Angeles Rams star and Pro Football Hall of Famer Tom Fears, who served as the team’s volunteer offensive coordinator and part-owner. Head Coach Brad Ecklund was also an retired NFL player and former NFL assistant coach.
After defeating the Los Angeles Mustangs in their home opener at Brea High School on July 11th, 1981, the Outlaws proceeded to lose their final nine contests to finish 1-9.
The Orange Empire Outlaws quietly disbanded following the 1981 season.
In Memoriam
Offensive coordinator and part-owner Tom Fears died on January 4, 2000 from complications of Alzheimer’s disease. The former Los Angeles Rams great was 77 years old. New York Times obituary.
Outlaws head coach Brad Ecklund passed away on February 6, 2010 at the age of 87.
