Background
The Niagara Falls Lancers were a semi-pro football outfit that competed the Midwest Football League for a single season during the summer and fall of 1971. The MFL consisted of teams from Michigan, New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania at the time.
The club operated in northeastern Pennsylvania in 1970 as the Lackawanna Lancers before moving to upstate New York. In Niagara Falls, the Lancers played at Hyde Park Stadium, sharing the facility with the Niagara Falls Pirates minor league baseball team during the late summer months.
During the 1971 season the Lancers compiled a regular season record of 9-5. The Lancers then lost on the road to the eventual league champion Lansing Lancers in a semi-final playoff game on November 6th, 1971. This proved to be the team’s final game. Lancers owner Pat Cipolla closed down the team in April of 1972.
