Baseball Summer: The Story of the 1937 Smiths Falls Beavers
by Doug Phillips
Background
The Beavers were a One-Year Wonder, playing Class C minor league baseball out of the small Eastern Ontario town of Smith Falls (pop. ~7,000) during the summer of 1937.
All of the Can-Am League’s eight members were in Ontario or New York state that season. Four would qualify for the playoffs, but a mid-season decision to adjust the schedule led to a dispute between Smith Falls and league officials on the season’s final day.
Finishing with a record of 57-49 (.538 winnipeg percentage), the Beavers landed in 5th place, one percentage point behind the Ogdensburg Colts (55-47, .539), a team that won two fewer games. Smith Falls argued that the additional games added to the schedule during the season resulted in the Beavers playing an additional ninth game in Ogdensburg (which Smith Falls lost) beyond the eight away games stipulated by the league’s constitution.
At an all-day league meeting on September 8th, 1937, league officers voted down Smith Falls’ protest and awarded fourth place and the playoff berth to the Ogdensburg Colts. The Colts went on to win the Can-Am League championship.
The Beavers never played another game, moving to Auburn, New York during the offseason and pro baseball has never returned to Smith Falls.
Beavers pitcher Xavier Rescigno recorded the lowest Earned Run Average (1.56) in the Can-Am loop in 1937.
