Reno Silver Sox (1947-1951)

There have been four different versions of the Silver Sox baseball team in Reno since World War II.  Today we will take a look at the original Silver Sox club, formed as a Class C farm club of the New York Giants in 1947. The team played three seasons in the Sunset League, winning a league title in 1948, and then two more of the Class D Far West League in 1950 and 1951. The closure of the Far West League in January 1952 left the Silver Sox with no place to play and Reno went without professional baseball until the formation of the second Silver Sox franchise in the California League in 1955.

The Reno BlackJacks were a One-Year Wonder in the independent Western Baseball League (WBL) during the summer of 1999. The BlackJacks were the last professional baseball team to make their home at Moana Stadium, Reno’s long-time home of minor league baseball dating back to 1947. The ballpark was demolished in 2012.

Reno Silver Sox (1955-1980)

The Class A Reno Silver Sox of 1955-1980 were the longest-lasting of four Nevada ball clubs that have used the Silver Sox monitor since World War II.  The other versions were included the Silver Sox of the Sunset League and the Far West League (1947-1951), the 1988-1992 seasons of this same California League franchise, and the 2006-2008 Silver Sox of the independent Golden League.
