Thomasville Hi-Toms (1965-1966)

The 1965-1966 Hi-Toms of the Western Carolinas League were one of a series of professional baseball clubs to make their home at Finch Field in the small North Carolina furniture-making city of Thomasville (pop. 15,190 in the 1960 census) between 1937 and 1969. Thomasville’s teams played under various names (Chair Makers, Tommies, Dodgers, Royals) over the years, but “Hi-Toms” was the most popular local moniker, used by three separate clubs between 1948 and 1968.

Statesville Owls Western Carolinas League

Statesville Owls (1960-1963)

The Statesville Owls of 1960-1963 were the last of three Minor League Baseball teams in the small western North Carolina city to use the ‘Owls’ moniker. The 1960’s ball club followed the original Owls (1939-1942) of the Tarheel League and the North Carolina State League and a post-WWII revival of the Owls that played in the latter league from 1947 until 1952. Future PGA tour golf standout J.C. Snead played for the 1962 Owls and was one of the Western Carolina League’s top offensive stars that season.
