The New Mexico Energee were one of six franchises that were supposed to play in a promotion called the Ladies Professional Basketball Association (LPBA) in the winter of 1980. The Energee, coached by disgraced for University of New Mexico men’s coach Norm Ellenberger, managed to play just three games in December 1980 before the ramshackle LPBA went out of business after only one week of play.

The New York Slapshots were a threadbare minor league hockey effort in the low-budget Atlantic Coast Hockey League.  The club debuted in the winter of 1985 with the intent of playing at a newly constructed 5,000-seat arena on Staten Island. Construction problems rendered the Slapshots homeless for the 1985-86 season. An effort to re-group for a second season at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute’s field house in Troy, New York flopped and the Slapshots folded just six games into their second campaign. Read more…

New Orleans Breakers

The New Orleans Breakers were a relatively popular entry in the United States Football League during the spring of 1984. The team gained national attention by signing teenage Marcus Dupree to a $6 million contract after the ex-University of Oklahoma star dropped out of college. The Breakers got off to a hot start 5-0 start in league play that spring and brought in crowds of over 30,000 to the Superdome. But the USFL’s sudden lurch to move to a fall season in 1986 doomed the franchise in the Big Easy.
