For a remarkable three-year period between 2004 and 2006 this amateur women’s soccer club that played in a 1,500-seat community college field in the Trenton suburbs managed to sign up a jaw-dropping roster of top players from all over the world. The Wildcats ran roughshod over the USL’s W-League during these years with only one North American women’s club – the Vancouver Whitecaps – able to stay on the field with them.

The Caribous of Colorado were a One-Year Wonder in the North American Soccer League during the summer of 1978.  The expansion Caribous were the NASL’s second effort at gaining a foothold in the Mile High City. The two-year run of the Denver Dynamos (1974-1975) ended with that club’s relocation to Minneapolis in 1976.  Like the Dynamos, the Caribous played out of Mile High Stadium, home of the NFL’s Denver Broncos. The Caribous are best remembered for their garish uniforms, which – in a nod to country & western culture – featured a horizontal strip of tan leather fringe across the lower rib cage. The franchise relocated to Atlanta ahead of the 1979 season.

Reno 1868 FC was a 2nd Division pro soccer club affiliated on the technical side with the San Jose Earthquakes of Major League Soccer and operated on the business side by the front office staff of Minor League Baseball’s Reno Aces of the Pacific Coast League. 1868 played out of Greater Nevada Field, the Aces’ 9,000-seat baseball stadium, from 2017 through 2020.

Iowa Barnstormers (1995-2001)

The remarkable story of Kurt Warner, who rose from supermarket stock boy to Super Bowl Champion and NFL Most Valuable Player over the course of five years, is one of the great legacies of the now-defunct Arena Football League. Warner, undrafted out of college, famously signed on with the Arena League’s Iowa Barnstormers in 1995. He led the Barnstormers into back-to-back Arena Bowl title games in 1996 and 1997, before earning his shot at the NFL with the St. Louis Rams.  By 1999, he was the NFL’s MVP and quarterback of a Super Bowl championship team in his first season as a starter. Warner’s fame briefly made the Iowa Barnstormers an object of cult fascination, if not quite a household brand name. So what became of the Barnstormers?
