The (original) New Orleans Voodoo were a tremendously popular Arena Football League team that played in the city from 2004-2005 and 2007-2008.ย The team went on hiatus for the 2006 season in the wake of Hurricane Katrina and saw its roster dispersed.ย But the Voodoo returned to New Orleans Arena in 2007 and were more popular than ever, setting an all-time league record with the reported sale of over 13,000 season tickets.
The NBA’s Utah Jazz began life as the New Orleans Jazz expansion franchise in 1974. New Orleans’ elite player was former LSU star Pete Maravich, but the Jazz never managed to surround Pistol Pete with enough complimentary talent to break through. The Jazz failed to post a winning record or make the playoffs during their five seasons in the Big Easy from 1974 to 1979. The franchise moved to Salt Lake City in the spring of 1979.
The New Haven Ninjas were a One-Year Wonder that were part of Arena Football 2, a small-market offshoot of the original Arena Football League (1987-2008). The Ninjas went 6-10 in their only season of operation in 2002 before arena problems left the team homeless. The Ninjas’ season-ending victory over the Rochester Brigade on July 27th, 2002 before an announced crowd of 4,588 was the final professional team sporting event played at the New Haven Coliseum.
