Los Angeles Xtreme

The Xtreme were the first and only champions of the original XFL, the start-up pro football league conceived by WWE wrestling kingpin Vince McMahon. The Xtreme won the league’s “Million Dollar Game” championship at the L.A. Memorial Coliseum on April 21, 2001 only to watch the league fold three weeks later. The team did help to re-launch the career of starting quarterback Tommy Maddox, a former NFL 1st round draft choice who won XFL Most Valuable Players honors in 2001 and became the NFL’s Comeback Player-of-the-Year in 2002 as a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

2001 Memphis Maniax Media Guide from the XFL

Memphis Maniax

The Memphis Maniax were one of eight franchises during the one and only season of the XFL, a failed joint venture between World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) and NBC. The team was widely mocked and derided for its name and logo, including by mental illness advocates. 1994 Heisman Trophy winning running back Rashaan Salaam along with two other former NFL first round draft picks, quarterback Jim Druckenmiller and defensive end Shante Carver, all attempted to re-boot their pro careers with the Maniax. NBC and WWE disbanded the XFL after one season in the spring of 2001.

Las Vegas Outlaws (2001)

Sin City’s entry in the often derided XFL of 2001 produced two of the league’s success stories, helping to launch long NFL careers for two of its players: wide receiver Mike Furrey and running back Rod Smart. Smart was also responsible for one of the XFL’s enduring images – his uniform name plate that read “He Hate Me” and received lots of camera attention during the XFL’s debut NBC national television broadcast in February 2001. The Outlaws and the XFL folded after one season of play in May 2001.
