Rocky Mount Phillies

The Rocky Mount Phillies were a Class-A minor league affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies in the mid-1970’s. In their final season, Rocky Mount won the 1975 Carolina League pennant with a 91-51 record. The Rocky Mount Phillies developed over a dozen future Major League players. The most successful was catcher John Stearns, who earned four National League All-Star selections with the New York Mets.

Rocky Mount Leafs (1941-1952)

The Rocky Mount Leafs were a low-level minor league baseball team from North Carolina, active intermittently from 1941 until 1952. The Leafs played in the Class D Coastal Plain League. Class D is a classification that was retired in 1963, roughly equivalent to the modern-day Rookie League classification. Rocky Mount’s later entry in the Class A Carolina League revived the “Leafs” identity for eleven seasons between 1962 and 1972.

Minor league baseball’s Rocky Mount (NC) Pines were a one-year wonder in the single-A Carolina League during the summer of 1980.  The team has attracted a minor cult following among baseball people due to its 24-114 record (.174 winning percentage), one of the worst ledgers in the history of the game.
