Amarillo Gold Sox (1976-1982)

Amarillo, Texas was a mainstay on the Class AA Texas League circuit from 1959 through 1982. Yellow City went through several Texas League clubs during the era, starting with the original Gold Sox, followed by the Sonics, the Giants and finally the latter-day Gold Sox.  Today we’ll take a loot at the Gold Sox re-boot that took the field at Potter County Memorial Stadium from 1976 until 1982.

Greenwood Pirates

The Greenwood Pirates, who toiled in the Class A South Atlantic League from 1981 to 1983, were the last professional baseball team to ever make their home in this South Carolina city. Greenwood’s Legion Field previously was home to the Western Carolina League’s Greenwood Braves from 1968 to 1979. The Pirates’ 1983 total attendance of 8,345 fans for a 72-game home schedule ranks as the worst single-season box office in South Atlantic League’s five-decade history. The franchise moved to Macon, Georgia prior to the 1984 season.

Augusta Pirates

The Augusta Pirates were a Class A farm of the Pittsburgh Pirates for six seasons during the late 1980’s/early 90’s. The franchise relocated from Macon, Georgia in 1988 after years of effort by Bill Heaton to bring pro baseball back to Augusta after a quarter century absence. The club was re-branded as the Augusta Greenjackets in 1994.
